Abstract

The behavior of antler rubbing in the Cervidae family during the period of hard antlers is related to the territorial marking and reproductive activity. Bawean deer (Axis kuhlii) is one of the rarest animals in Indonesia and endemic to Bawean Island. The knowledge of their biology in the natural habitat is scarce. The objective of this study is to understand on their behavior, particularly the stags during their hard antlers period by observing their rubbing activities on the plantations in their natural habitat. Data collections were conducted in four sites, from June 1996 to October 1996, through monthly visit. Transects with the length of 900 to 2000 m and width of 100 m were established. Observation took place every 100 m along the transect in both sides on the area of 25m2.. the name of local plants which were rub was noted, the length and width of the rubbing marks on the plants and the diameter of the plant were measured. The result showed there were 22 species (in which 7 were unidentified) of plants being rub by the deer. The highest intensity is on Macu (15%) followed by Ngos-ngosan and Sentol (11% each). Number of death plants due to rubbing activity was very low (<1%). Mean of the plants diameter being rub was 19.1 mm, with the length and total area being rub were 19.1 mm and 6521 mm2, respectively. From this study it can be concluded that stags rub the plants during their hard antlers period on the bushy type category. The rutting season for Bawean stags in their habitat was estimated between May to November.

Abstract

Some rock phosphates used as fertilizers or to produce fertilizers which containing very high cadmium and have been suspected to increase trace element content in soild. In order to know if the cadmium can be mobilized, we have studied the bio-remediation of Cd and bio-availibility of P from three rock phosphates (from North Caroline, Togo and Senegal) by ectomycorrhyzal fungi (Pisolithus tinctorius and Suillus granulatus) in pure culture. In pure culture the fungi accumulated 80-100% Cd soluble. In the experiments, the % bio-accumulation or bio-remediation of Cd was not always correlated with the Cd content of the phosphate nor their hardness.

Abstract

The mangrove forest occurred in the north coast of Pasuruan Regency have not been reported about the vegetational and substrate compositions. The research's purpose were to analysis the vegetational composition and the chemical properties of the substrate. The result showed that this mangrove forest were dominated by association of Sonneratia alba - Avicennia marina. The result showed that soils had the natural reaction (pH 7.01-7.65), low in organic matter (2.18-4.27%) and total nitrogen (0.48-0.51%), but high in total phosphorus (15.19-29.22 ppm) and in exchangeable cation (Ca2+: 389.855-504.065 mg/100 gr, Mg2+: 409.522-441.400 mg/100 gr, K+: 228.900-390-435 mg/100 gr).

Abstract

Dial activity of two sympatric lizard Mabuya multifasciata and Tachydromus sexlineatus in cacao plantation under four weather conditions (sunny, little bit cloudly, cloudly, and sunny with wet surface ground) were observed. M. multifasciata were active as long as the light condition permitted, they were active also even on cloudly and fine wet surface ground when T. sexlineatus were not active. The number of active individual of T. sexlineatus was influenced by the number of active individual of M. multifasciata. This mechanism was seem to avoid competition between two species.

Abstract

Differences on body size between male and female scincids generally influence intraspecific food niche. However information on the sexual dimorphism on M. multifasciata is unavailable. The aim of this study was to understand the relation between sexual dimorphism on the body size and food niche difference. Fifty four specimen of M. multifasciata consisted of 19 adult males, 23 adult females, and 12 subadult were collected from Indonesian Botanical Garden in Bali and they were measured for their morphology. The result on univariant, correlation and multiple regression statistical analyses on morphology of variant snout to vent length (SVL), mount length (ML), mount wide (MW), humerus length (HL), radius length (RL), femur length (FL), and tibia length (TL) on adult males, adult females and subadult of M. multifasciata revealed that there were no sexual dimorphism between adult males and adult females; strong correlation among the varians, and regression square of all the variants to SVL on adult males, adult females, and subadult up to 0.96. the intraspecific food niche differences between adult males and adult females had no effect on the sexual dimorphism.

Abstract

The root of Sondoricum emargiatum, Meliaceae was collected in North Tapanuli, North Sumatera. Local people use this timber plant for construction and the fruit bark for cooking (Naito, 1986). In the previous investigation, 1,3,4 cuparatrien-15-ol, 4.15-cubebene and secobryononic acid were isolated from stem bark of Sondoricum emargiatum (Pratiwi). Further fractionation of n-hexane extract of root bark of Sondoricum emargiatum in the isolation of two triterpenes resulted byononic (1) and 3,4-seco-olean-4 (23), 12-dien-3,29-dionic acids (3) and their structures were elucidated by IR, MS, and NMR-spectroscopy. Compound (1) and (3) were forund more active than methyl bryononic derivate (2) with Brine Shrimp as bioindicator.
